Adobe InDesign won’t open? Here’s how to fix it

If Adobe InDesign won’t open, crashes during startup, freezes on the splash screen or refuses to launch, don’t panic. This guide explains the most common causes and walks you through proven fixes that work on both Mac and Windows.

Restart and update:

  • Restart your computer. Go to Adobe Creative Cloud app and ensure you are running the latest version of the. Update your operating system to prevent compatibility conflicts.

Reset your preferences:

  • Hold the keys Cmd+Ctrl+Opt+Shift (macOS) Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows)
  • The exact moment you launch the app, and click “Yes” when prompted to delete preference files.

Disable third-party plugins:

  • Plugins (especially font managers or external export tools) often cause launch failures. Remove them temporarily to see if InDesign launches.

Manually delete corrupted preferences (Mac)

If a specific app refuses to launch, its settings file might be corrupted.
  • Open Finder, hold down the Option key, and click Go > Library in the menu bar.
  • Navigate to the Preferences folder.
  • Search for the app’s .plist file (com.adobe.InDesign.plist), move it to the Trash, and restart the app. The Mac will create a fresh, clean preference file automatically.

Check for corrupted fonts:

  • Recently installed fonts can crash the startup process. Try removing newly added fonts from your system’s Font Book (Mac) or Fonts folder (Windows).

InDesign won’t open – WIndows

  • Use Disk Cleanup. It is a tool that comes pre-installed on all Windows systems.
  • If you have Windows installed, you won’t need to install another piece of software in order to tidy up your system. Simply type ‘Disk Cleanup’ into the search menu and open the program that appears.
  • Choose the drive you’d like to clean and check or uncheck the boxes next to the types of files you want to keep or remove. These include temporary Internet files, thumbnails, or files in your recycling bin.
  • In order to give your computer a deeper clean, click on Clean up system files. Windows will then scan your system (this can take longer depending on when it last occurred) after which you can again browse the files it found and decide what should be deleted.

Always save your files to the cloud or another off-site location. Adobe provides cloud storage as part of its services, although surprisingly few people make use of it.
